Moving brassicas
« on: August 04, 2014, 10:52 »
Hi all,

I have just been given a full plot on our allotment site, I currently have a half plot but have been asked to clear it out by the end of August for new tenants.

I currently have some psb, swedes and sprouts growing, would they survive transplanting?

Thanks.

How big are they? The bigger they are, the more watering they need. Of those, I reckon the Swedes will have the biggest problem. A lot depends on how long they have been in and how big a rootball you can take across with you. Once you transplant, try to cover them with something to keep the sun off for a few days.

i had the same problem earlier in the season, i watered them really well in the morning and then transplanted in the evening to avoid the heat, watered well for a couple of days and they all survived :nowink: :) :)

And remember that you can plant brassicas deep too. Puddle them in and cover the surface of the planting hole with dry soil, as this helps prevents evaporation.

A debris netting sunshade will help too

i had to move my swedes a few weeks ago, as they were being over run by my psb (lesson learnt for next season).

they really sulked the first few days, only starting to really recover now. not sure they'll come to anything to be honest, i'm pretty doubtful.

at the end of the day you have no choice, so nothing to loose. unless you ask the new tenant if they want them left, or just dump in the compost heap. if your like me i can't bare dumping living plants in the heap.

It may also be worth asking the new tennants if they're happy for you to leave them there and share the crop.  :)

Thanks everyone for the advise. Unfortunately I don't know who the next tenants will be, or when they are moving in. So this weekend I decided to transplant all the Sprouts and broccoli. I did this on Saturday and they were sulking a bit on Sunday so I give them another good water.

Fingers crossed they will be fine!

Probably keep watering them longer-term as the plants will have some damaged roots that will take a while to repair.  Perhaps also consider staking some of the taller ones to help prevent wind rock.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
