eaten tomatoes
« on: August 19, 2014, 21:41 »
managed to get down plot to day to check sprouts for catterpillers, that went out the window when i found my tomatoes on one side of the g/house have been eaten, they just look like a child has taken a bite out of them. been growing tomatoes in there for years and this is the first time this has happened. could it be mice....

Could well be tomato moth caterpillers...I've been picking the critters off for the last few days. They particularly seem to like plum type tomatoes rather than cherry toms.

They can be green or brown and will almost always, pick the best looking fruit to have a munch at before moving onto the next best fruit  >:(

Check for slug / snail as well. they have been having a feast on the lower toms in my greenhouse at home.  always seems to be on the side that is facing away from you, and only on the lowest truss.  Crafty little beggers.

Here's a picture of the sort of thing you are looking for.

It drops to the floor if you disturb it and overwinters in the soil.

Birds have been pecking at mine. You can see the beak puncture holes in toms that they've decided against before moving on to the prime ones.
