harris 467: bean problem
« on: August 08, 2014, 12:52 »
Ok this is my 3rd attempt, lol. Planted blue lake late June and all was going well until a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that the new leaves were appearing deformed and the lower leaves have brown/gold patches on them.  Can't figure out if it's blight or something else.  I've tried to upload pictures but I just seem to lose my post when I do. Will try uploading in a separate message. Thanks.

The strange leaf looks like some kind of a virus to me. I'd remove that plant.

The brown splodges just look like wind damage, and nothing to worry about IMO

One vote for bean mosaic virus from me - spread by aphids or in the seeds originally. If you pick off the deformed leaves the plant might grow through it. Don't save seeds from the plant for next year though as they will carry it. (according to google sources!)

PS My runners have it too.

Thanks surbie, I'll try removing the affected leaves and see what happens.  Will the pods be affected? The flowers seem to be ok.

As far as I read, there's nothing wrong with eating the pods, just with saving the seed for replanting next year. Might be a bit of a reduced yield apparently. I've had to bin one of my runners and most of the others have had a fairly drastic haircut.

These things might be the disease spreaders - non-native green shield bugs. The native ones are harmless, apparently these aren't. I have seen loads on my borlottis and runners and just found out what they are, and that they are particularly concentrated in London and on allotment sites. Might be worth a look on your beans.

When it stops raining I am going out for a squish.

Those are apparently all the same thing, just at different stages of their cycle. And all on my ruddy beans!
