Personally I think it is but I like to grow things as late as possible. I have some Chinese cabbage and other oriental stuff to go in yet as well as winter lettuce maybe even some of my leftover french bean seeds. I don't usually have free ground till late Oct/early November.

The bed where I grew the onions is empty after a disastrous failure of the crop so I thought I'd give it a rest and have covered it with manure and don't intend to grow anything else this year.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I had cauliflowers and winter swedes to follow my onions and my potato bed was followed by a second wave of dwarf beans and quick maturing peas. I wont have any spare ground until later.

How about sowing a green manure crop while you still have the warmth and rain, then mulch the green manure with the manure to kill it off and let the worms do the digging over winter and turn the bed over in spring next year - if it needs it; probably won't.

I did the green manure thing last year on a couple of beds and it really nourished the soil on those beds for this years planting - will defiantly do it again this year when I finally get a bed free
