Left over chitting potatoes.
« on: August 07, 2014, 07:53 »
I was rather over indulgent with buying seed potatoes this year and didn't have enough room to plant them all. I am now left with about 20 or more Desiree potatoes chit ting in the shed. Will these keep until next year or would it be worth planting them out anywhere or should I just throw them?

I wouldn't bother. They won't keep until next year. Planted now they might make something small by the December festival, but Desiree are a slow growing main crop, not suited to "new" potatoes and you'll also have the enemies of blight and frost.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

or you could plant in buckets and move into the greenhouse just before frost appears an you have lost nothing for the trying - I've planted some late early potatoes for Christmas like that, and this year the early are as big as main crop anyway.
