I have tried several times to grow bulb fennel.  Never even get seedlings.  I'm presuming it's slugs.  I usually start things in modules to get round the slug problem, I don't think you can do this with fennel, is this correct?

I started mine in modules and then planted them out (26th June) when they were like this . . .



now (picture from 24th July) they are like this . . .

Lovely fennels there.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  I just love it.  I really like to use it with puy lentils in a lamb casserole. With mash 

Even the gone-to-seed stalk can be used as it's full of flavour for the stock or gravy and can be hoiked out the dish at the end

My bulb fennel plants are in an area I finally dug for carrots, there doing well but not as big as some people's on the site can only assume they need a bit of feeding.

I've sown some at home recently in modules to back fill areas of the plot thy are already bare. I know they don't like being moved but I can't get to the plot often enough to water seedlings
