Onion sets and Manure
« on: January 10, 2008, 16:59 »
Hi I have just been to B & Q and bought 100 Sturon Onion sets for spring planting. On the planting instructions it says
do not  plant the sets on ground that has been manured within the last year.

But I heavily manured my whole plot (except a smallish area for my carrots) last October.

I am confused I didn't know Onions didn't like manure.
Can anyone throw some light on this for me?

I reckon they'll love the manure you put on.

I hope they like manure as well as I too heavily manured the plot ready for my onions,I once saw a programme on tv where guys who grow the giant onions must have put a lorry load on one small plot .
I was wondering if I could leave the straw on the surface to act as a mulch and push the sets into the soil below rather than dig it all in
what did I do before the lottie?

They (B & Q, not the previous posters!), don't know what they are talking about. Go for it. Just don't grow root crops - carrots, parsnips etc. there.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'd be tempted to rake off the surface straw BRD since onions are quite shallow rooted and will appreciate direct contact with warmer soil

You're not wrong there I used to work for 'em, some of the cr@p they wanted us to sell was laughable, nothing was watered or looked after properly even tho' they had some very good qualified people work for them who tried their best,  we used to tell em to go to a proper garden centre

Why does everyone go for these deals, my local garden centre is just as cheap and gives good sound advice on anything to do with gardening. Support your local nurseyman coz when they are gone and you pop down woolies and ask them questions about the variety or white rot etc, well I can see the blank look on their faces. Sorry to shout on but I have a strong opinion about this. I have learnt so much over the years from them.

Quite right Aidy.

My local nursery's quality is far in excess of the large stores, plus you can buy EXACTLY how many you want.

I do appreciate that some are not near a nursery, but if you can get to a  Woolies, B & Q etc, you should be able to get to a nursery.
