Gooseberries
« on: June 27, 2014, 17:13 »
This is my first summer on my allotment!!  Just picked 5 pound gooseberry's. Not sure of the varieties though?..The large green ones which I thought might be sharp are actually sweet!  The ones with a 'pink' bloom are 'sharp'....anyway I think it is time for jam making!..... :D :D

Picked 2lb from each of my 2 Invicta bushes. Waiting for the Hinnomaki red and the Josta berries.

Went to our local pick your own and picked 40 lb ready for jam making. And cakes and cheesecakes.

Gooseberry and strawberry jam,  gooseberry and elderflower and gooseberry and orange. :D

We had a gooseberry bush and you could eat the fruit atraight off it (almost). Just Googled it and it was called Leveller.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Gooseberries seem to have done really well this year, and I picked quite a lot the other day. Yesterday, while the weather was too wet to do anything else, I made four jars of gooseberry jelly.

nice and sharp for cooking at mo and in a couple of months they sweeten up for eating.

Obviously the chickens prefer sour and being whistled away from the "netted" gooseberries   ::)

I've got two bushes and no idea what type other than green and really sour.  Picked 3lb off them yesterday and as I am the only who likes them have made eight individual gooseberry pies today.  Will have one for pudding tonight and the rest for the freezer.

Does anyone have any experience of growing the thornless ones? Can you recommend a variety as the backs of my hands are punctured to blazes and I'd like to start again this autumn

Nope - but I'm gong to try to grow mine as a cordon next year - seems to be a good way to avoid punctures...
