Growing fruit in hanging baskets
« on: July 08, 2014, 13:07 »
I don't have a lot of space.  Has anyone ever tried growing fruit in hanging baskets?  I was thinking of trying to grow some gooseberries there.
Also does anyone know a good place to buy large hanging baskets from?

Try strawberries, I don't think gooseberries will work.

i would say a fruit that grows across rather than up would prob trail down from a basket.

strawberries would definitely be ok, prob blackberry, pos rhubarb if you can get a basket big enough.

I've tried strawberries in hanging baskets in the past, and they were not very successful, although I've had similar experience with any strawberries in pots (compared to growing in a bed), as I guess they do not get asnywhere near as many nutrients, and dry out much more quickly.

Looking at the Thompson-Morgan ideas, though, I might just need to try nasturtiums next year!

I was thinking of maybe using an old tin bath or a water butt to get enough depth.

They would grow well in a large container as long as you keep them watered correctly.  Prune as a standard for gooseberries would be a good idea.
