chitting peas

From a tray of 15 modules - six peas have germinated so I've tried chitting peas now - so questions are

1) how large do you let them get before planting?
2) Is that the root coming out thus it's root end down or
3) Is that the vegetation and its that way up?

It's a root, and I plant them in modules as soon as I see them  :)

Even though they're chitted they can still take a few days, after planting, for the shoot to appear - but at least you know that it was a viable seed.

I must admit i've never done this, i think we sowed 20 last week in modules under glass and all 20 have come up, whats the advantage here?

EDIT: Ahh i see, its when module sowing has been unsuccessfull.

Is chitting peas widely done?

I chit all of my large dried seeds like peas, beans, and sweetcorn. Also more recently parsnips. It just means you have a higher success rate when you plant in the ground, modules or whatever as you only plant the seeds that have chitted successfully.

I never chit peas, but there again I deal in quantities!

Talking of quantities, don't underestimate how many you need, one of the recommended spacings needs 15 for just one foot of row.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've just started 100 douce provence - chitting half, sowing the other.

DD, given your experience with the solitary Kent Blue, did you revise your spacings at all? I seem to remember you were thinking about it because the plant grew so big.
