It will store for eating, but if the rust was bad, I personally wouldn't save any for replanting.

I am still eating my garlic picked early August last year.  It had rust dried it out and I have kept it in the loft over winter.

I've stored and re-planted rusty garlic without any problems; it doesn't seem to affect the bulbs. The next year there might be no rust at all, it just seems to depend on the growing conditions.

Had really bad rust on my garlic so I pulled it all up.  Small bulbs not fully formed.  But there was no green left at all.  They had all but died back.

When I lift mine, I put it straight into the shed to dry, spreading it out on a shelf.  (Don't wash it, and don't leave it out in the sun.) The tops are still on at this stage.

After a few weeks of air drying like this, I gently crumble off any dried soil on the bulbs, and cut off the dried tops, still leaving about 4 inches of stalk.

Then I move them into a frost-free garage to store over winter, in seed trays.  Check them from time-to-time and throw away any that go soft.  Only tidy them up when your ready to bring them into the kitchen.

Put the best bulbs to one side to provide the cloves for replanting in October, but don't break them up until replanting time.

If your garlic hasn't divided into cloves don't worry - just treat the "roundels" in the same way and replant them whole; they make big plants next year.

As above, I have stored and replanted rusty garlic, with no rust the next year.

Excellent. I'll have to start having garlic mash if I get no spuds.

To back up what people have already said, in this journal they planted garlic that had rust the previous year under control conditions and it did not develop rust.
