I have had butternut squash come up from seeds in the compost.  They have quite furry leaves, and I knew they were bns because that was the only sort of squash I had bought and thrown seeds in the compost bin!.  They came up too late to ripen fruit, unfortunately.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go then. I've got the room this year - not growing sprouts cos I've finally decided that it's too much bother for just one person who will eat them (me!).
