Kohl rabi and pak choi
« on: May 26, 2014, 15:41 »
I went to the garden centre today to get a few cauliflower plug plants to make up my shortfall (will sow more next year!) and it only worked out £2 dearer to get a strip of kohl rabi and a strip of pak choi - around 12 plants per strip.

I have never grown them before (or eaten kohl rabi) so is there anything in particular I need to think about? I am guessing that kohl rabi will need netting being a brassica? Will the pak choi?

Pigeons will eat both, the Pak Choi is worth having the Kohl Rabi isn't, as far as I'm concerned anyway
Do you really need al that lettuce/

Thanks. I will net them both then. Is kohl rabi a bit like celeriac mum? I love it but such a pain to grow here... ( and so cheap in the supermarket )

Similar swollen stem, but more cabbage/swede than celery in taste IMO

Sorry for butting in here: what's pak choi like, RJR_38? I've never grown it but in texture it looks a bit coarse. You obviously like it enough to buy some in. Could you give me some advice?

It really takes off on my clay soil over here. I love 'em. They are slightly sweet and crunchy and really good in a chunky salad. Haven't tried cooking it yet as they really don't last long here.

I love kohl rabi, and have a new batch sown direct, as I got some to germinate in trays, but they failed after a couple of weeks.

A chum here suggested that it's easier to sow them direct, but the slugs also like them as well as pigeons!

There's a Youtube piece, which I find charming!

I use pak choi in stir frys - I just shred it and mix it in with bean sprouts and other veg. There may well be more adventurous ways if eating it but I've never had enough to worry about finding other ways of eating it. Maybe this year I will have to!

The kohl rabi plants I have are quite big now growster so will hopefully be ok. If it ever stops raining I will get them out this week!

I have tried pak choi for the fits time this year and they have grown and tasted amazing!!  I have to say that growing 30 plants in one go was a HUGE mistake but hey my work colleagues have benefitted from my harvest.[

Thanks for the info. Kohl rabi is this summer's new veg, so Pak choi is on the list for next year.  :)
