Quail chicks
« on: May 02, 2014, 20:35 »
Hi

I have some quail eggs in the inci and ama little unsure what to feed them on when they hatch, some people say unmedicated chick crumbs another site said unmedicated turkey crumb ans another one said game crumb.

I thought I would ask you what you thought was the best as I do not want to give them the wrong food.

Can't wait for them to hatch  ::)

They do require more protein than hens. As adults I successfully fed un medicated chick crumb, resulting in an egg a day for three seasons from each quail. What would have happened after this I do not know as we were flooded unexpectedly overnight resulting in their loss.

I suspect they will need something with more protein still as chicks. You could try Googling quail chick feed and see what this brings up or even just quail. I'm sure someone else will reply with more info.

Little bumble quai -very exciting :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

To start off with when they hatch I use chick crumb, either medicated or non medicated. (Use non medicated when they are of egg laying age) I also mix dry egg food in with it which is about the same crumb size and higher in protein.

Most pet shops sell it. I usually pay around £3kg

If you are not sure what it is, look on ebay for egg food to see what it is.

You could boil and mash an egg but it will go off very quickly in the heat of the brooder.

Mine are in an aviary so they get all sorts of seeds and fresh fruit/veg as well as

You can buy quail food but i feel it is a bit of a con when you look at the ingrediants: Chick crumb and millet seed.

By coincidence someone has just given me a back of crumb which says on it for Quails, Pheasant and Game.
If you can get hold of something similar then i would buy that, but as in my previous post that is fine as well.

They also like chopped dandelion leaves (washed) rocket etc
