My elderly neighbour has just given me two large sacks of Homebase multipurpose compost, a sack of rose-fertilizer and a sack of lawn feed/weed/moss-killer.

I know for sure that they were purchased five years ago.

Do products like this have a limited life or are they OK to use?

Don't know whether they do deteriorate, but I'd use them!

The reason I ask is that when my son worked at B&Q many years ago, he told me they were obsessive about stock rotation on their compost

I think shops have to be.

As for compost, if it's unopened then it won't be in too bad condition; you might want to consider adding fertiliser slightly sooner (usually it has enough for 6 weeks of standard plant growth), but it's unlikely to have become contaminated such that it's unsuitable.

Put it this way, plants survive without any fertiliser at all.  You've got nothing to lose by applying some free fertiliser ...
