I try to hang on to the late spring bank holiday, but i dont think the french beans will wait that long.  They will need fleece protection.

I've potted up the squashes and cucs into bigger pots - they will go on in the cold frame for a while.

Its all down to your own microclimate. On Saturday night there was a frost at the allotment, but not in my garden 2 miles away. So my french beans are hardening off nicely.

Hi Annad83,
I have a piece of string in my hand if you can guess its length them I will tell you when we will get our last frost.  :tongue2:

I would guess at your string being twice half its length................  Any chance of a frost prediction  ;)

When I went to check my greenhouse in the morning there were frost flowers on it. My rain barrel had a nice layer of ice on it. But if all goes fine night temperatures should be improving later this week. Maybe i can even leave some seedlings out during the night. But not my precious tomatoes of course.

My delicate ones won't go out till the 1st of june.

I'm in Hertfordshire and I desperately want to plant put some of my more tender plants but know I need to wait for the last frost! Any idea when that's likely to be?! Thanks!! Anna

Last week . . .  my guess is just about as valid as anyone else's  :D

A quick Google throws this up, but I've no idea how reliable it is:

These "last frost dates" in whatever format can only ever serve to be a guide. It can never be a hard and fast rule.

What it does show, however, is how widely our climate varies over the UK and how important it is to take this into account when reading the sowing and planting dates on the back of seed packet. (Also putting it into your forum profile when asking advice!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

NewSteve's map looks way too optimistic in general, and definitely so as far as Sheffield is concerned (already had a ground frost this May!)

It may be mapping air temperatures of 0C or below rather than the possibility of ground frosts in vulnerable areas at air temperatures as high as +4-5C, but the key doesn't make it clear which of those applies.

As has been stated elsewhere, particularly tender crops need conditions warmer than just frost-free.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
