Recipe for comfrey and/or nettle tea needed
« on: May 03, 2014, 14:50 »
I have comfrey and nettles, and am sure someone on here has got a recipe for a liquid feed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Loads of videos on youtube. But as far as I know, you fill a tub with leaves, add water, cover and leave for a month or so. Then stand back and hold your breath when you take off the lid  ::)

Thats all I do. Then dilute a bit  more if necessary to the colour of weak tea

That's how I do my nettle tea at the moment.
I'm planning to set up a comfrey pipe this year though - it is meant to eliminate the 'smell issue' - from what I've read you take a drainage downpipe, stuff it full of comfrey, insert a weight at the top (bottle full of water will do) which compresses the nutrients out of the comfrey - collect it in a bottle at the bottom - takes some time (weeks/month) - you then have VERY concentrated feed in the bottle that apparently doesn't smell too bad - and add it to your watering can as required.

Cheers,
Balders
(and good luck with the hip GG)

I stuff an old net curtain with comfrey leaves.  Put a brick in with them and then tie the net curtain into a bundle and sink it into a barrel load of water.  Leave in a nice warm sunny place for 6-8 weeks and hey presto a lovely sewer smelling brown liquid that your plants will enjoy:)  Don't forget to dilute it.  I use 1/2 ltr to a 13ltr watering can of water - about once per fornight is about right for most plants.  Weekly for when your fruiting veg are fruiting.  Nettle tea, made in the same way is a good nitrogen feed for your leafy and brassic veggies.
Now what shall I do today?

I. Started some last week, the leaves have already disintegrated and the water is brown and smelly so I have strained it into another big yellow becket too dilute for watering.  Should I have left it longer?

Normally you cram a bucket with nettles and then fill it with water; leave it somewhere shady* for a few weeks and then use a cup or two per watering can?

*preferably somewhere away from the house...

I start cutting soon then just throw it into the water butt placed right at the greenhouse, which also has a filler pipe from the gutters to keep it topped up. In a drought period I top it up with the fresh water hose pipe. I then just keep adding comfrey throughout the cutting season and keep adding water if required.

This way I have "Tea on Tap" 24/7...  I have a hose on the tap and simply water the toms in the gh with it and then the outside plants... Then I use the fresh water hose and give it all a good watering to dilute it.. it's just too much faffing to dilute and do by can. None of my plants have ever died and the tom plants produce loads of juicy fruits.. Diluting with a can is fine if you have half a dozen or so plants but I have about 50!! Yes we love out tomatoes..

this is what I do. It's good stuff, not smelly like the tea and can be diluted 1:10 for most uses.

That's great - thanks. Presume I can combine nettles and comfrey together in one bucket or is it best to do them separately? I don't do toms though so won't need it for them specifically.

I brew or press them separately as I use Comfrey for fruiting and nettles for leaf development.
