Cucumber question
« on: April 24, 2014, 23:25 »
Hi, have a question about growing different cucumbers together for you knowledgable folks. I'd like to grow an outdoor ridge cuke in the polytunnel again as yields were high, but will also be growing cucamelons and a white cuke variety called Long White. Will this result in bitter fruit? Thanks.

Mixing varietys won't cause bitter fruit this year, but might if you try to save seed for next.

You could be in for some interesting results - ridge cucumbers usually require pollination, most GH cukes don't, and cucamelons probably do, although that's a guess - you need a response from someone who has actually grown them.

I think I'd either just cross my fingers and hope for the best, or try to keep pollinating insects out of the PT as far as possible, and arm myself with an artist's paintbrush to do some hand-pollinating where appropriate.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

long white is also a ridge cuke so  will need pollinating insects, as will the cucamelon.

Re cucamelons :-

Botanically, they are neither cucumber nor watermelon and won’t cross with either
