Grape vine newbie
« on: April 21, 2014, 14:20 »
Hi I was bought 2 grapevines for my birthday.I have planted them but I'm now stuck. I've spent hours looking over the internet for which type of trellis to use and am baffled there so much info and I don't know what's the best way for me to go.
The varieties I have are grape flame and lakemont.
When I got them they were just sticks with roots and wax on top(sorry to sound so untechnical). A few shoots have now appeared and I again have looked over the internet to see if I should let all shoots grow etc but again confused. Please help. I have included photos of each as they are now.
Thanks.

I'm no expert, as I've let mine grow very triffid like in the past, but generally in my area of France I've seen only two main leaders allowed to develop, which are trained one left and one right along wires, either just a wire frame (like a raspberry frame) or against a wall.  Any secondary shoots from the main leaders are trained to another set of wires.

The aim being only one "layer" of fruits and leaves are available to get maximum sun.

Grapes are pretty tough once established (this winter I cut mine right back from a 20ft knarled mess to a 1ft high stump and it has still sprouted!)

They doo needs lots of warmth and sun, and a sheltered south facing aspect is generally best

One rule for controlling them is to not feed them, just plant them with some water and leave them. Otherwise, they put out masses of new growth you don't really want. Ask me how I know.

Like Casey's mine went wild everywhere but they were on an arbor and I didn't mind the shade they gave, as well as all the grapes. The grapes weren't large but I had masses of clusters. This year I have to thin the wildness a bit since they started attacking everyone walking through the arbor to reach the orchard  :D
