If you must do weedkiller then contain the chooks for several weeks. I prefer to hand weed.

Realistically if you allow chooks on your lawn you will get bare patches which will repopulate with weeds. Could you fence an area off for them and/or a fenced area that you can move around so that you can repair any damage? :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Can you not sow grass seed on to the area they have just cleared & manured for you?

My chickens ate weeds out the lawn, and scratted out all the moss. They did a great job on it!  They manure as they go, so the grass gets greener once you've moved them on.  My husband (a lawn lover) was frantic when I put my hens on his precious sward but when he was gawping at it from the bedroom window he changed his tune, as he said the lawn where the hens had been was spectacularly healthy compared to the rest. He loved the hens after that.  Don't leave them too long on one bit though as they dig holes.  A dust bath for them, eg a bit tray full of compost or sand, soil etc is needed to try and stop them digging up the lawn
