Double trouble!
« on: January 05, 2008, 17:11 »
Please, can anyone help me? I asked advice some time ago about one of my hens who lays shell-less eggs. Well, she is still doing so, about six weeks on! I've given her loads of grit ( large and small) and she and the others have the run of the huge garden half of every day.
After so long, do you think there is any chance she will ever start laying proper eggs?
PS She is THE most consistant layer of the whole bunch, but lays them on the ground, usually in the previous night's droppings!!
Second query - can anyone tell me of a supplier of egg boxes which are cheap and the postage is not exhorbitant? I don't mind buying bulk but sometimes the postage is almost as much as the boxes :!:

Hi
One of my girls lays soft eggs  every now & again (more often than not).  My SIL has 100 chooks & if they get one that lays softies, its a duffer !! She says that no matter what you try nothing works, tend to agree as have tried everything, but I love her & I don't care, she won't be going in the pot!!
Egg boxes Ebay of course

I'd agree.  If she's laying soft shelled eggs still it probably won't change  :( How old is she  :?:

Try adding a little cod liver oil to their feed, it might help calcium absorption (possibly).

In reply to Aunt Sally's question:
The hen that lays the soft eggs must be about 26 weeks now. We bought them as point of lay - but weeks later they still hadn't laid nor produced a proper comb, so I'm not sure how old they really were!

They are quite young and should all come in to lay as the days lengthen.  Is long as the girl who is laying the softies is OK I'd not worry too much.

Give her some crushed oyster shell as well as the grit and some olive oil.
