I never feed them once planted out. All fertiliser is added to the soil before planting out and that's it for me.

I usually throw a bit of growmore around them and they do fine. I find the biggest effect on crop size is keeping them clear of weeds as, especially early on. If it's dry early on then they'll benefit from watering.

Ditto - dig in some general fertilizer like Growmore and that is it.. no more feeding required.

Depends if you like to feed soil organically or not. If your not too fussed, growmore will work fine. Just top dress at recommended rate a couple of weeks before planting out. Likewise with the organic version, blood fish and bone. Over time, feeding soil organically will benefit you hugely. Soil must be In good heart too, but that goes for every type of veg you grow.
By feeding onions later on in the season, you risk too much leafy green growth which will lead to them storing poorly.

I experimented with growing through that black weed control fabric. Works a treat. Keeps the moisture in and no weeding!  I'm doing all my onions that way now, although I'm pretty low volume compared to many. Its a pity they dont make it in brown colour though - black looks ugly.

But how do you feed them? That was the question!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have loads of plastic bottles of wormery juice. I add a sprinkle of chicken pellets to each bottle when it's filled and it dissolves over time. At feeding time I add a goodly glug of that, plus a squirt of comfrey juice  (made without adding water) to a watering can and feed with that. Perhaps every two weeks.

I sprinkle chicken pellets on the ground a couple of weeks before planting - tend to do the same for most of my outdoor veg seed beds.  Apart from that, I don't feed onions once they are in the ground.
