Sweetcorn in the greenhouse
« on: March 10, 2014, 11:15 »
This year I plan to grow sweetcorn in the greenhouse - had zero luck outside... going to grow half a dozen or so and group them together. My question is, what size pots would be best for them?
Lucky Mother of 2 dogs, 2 cats (RiP Sherlock) and 4 chickens (welcome Brenda and Harriet)

They are very hungry, thirsty plants so I'd say the bigger the better.

I've posted on here a few times re- growing sweetcorn in the GH. Though I started growing them outside and had some crops, I had two years without any cobs at all.  >:(  GH it was, and they have been a huge success. I interplant them with dwarf French beans which, along with climbing French beans (you only need one of these per GH as it grows like a triffid) were also successful. I have a raised bed on one side of the GH so plant directly in the soil. Their roots don't seem to go down that far when I hoick them out, so I would get as big a diameter pot as you can and place on a solid watering tray. Use a good general purpose soil-based compost and add chicken manure pellets when growing strongly.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Pollination is by wind so you will have to be very particular about making sure you you shake the plants frequently at the right time.

I grew sweetcorn in my polytunnel last year very easily as long as you can keep the water going in, as to pot sizes go to Wickes or B&Q and buy the builders buckets, 99p and £1 each, best large pot available  :D
