Bought a huge tub of bonemeal today at cherry lane garden centre for £5!  So pleased with myself for getting a bargain.  But I have looked it up on the web and it is pretty useless by itself.  If I also add chicken pellets at the same time will it be useful or have I just wasted the money?

Bonemeal is the root builder so if you are planting any permanent plants , Raspberries etc put a handful in the planting hole.

I always buy lots of bonemeal and that sounds like a good deal.

In my garden, I always add other things at the same time as bonemeal like rotted manure, kelp meal, etc.

BTW, bonemeal takes about 3 months before bonemeal releases the nutrients so roots can absorb it, so sprinkle early, then regularly.

I wouldn't say bonemeal is useless. It's a slow release phosphorous fertiliser and good for helping plants establish. I used it in a potting mix for fruit trees recently.

I'd assume (not talking from experience) that it's good to dig in areas in advance where you plan to grow root crops.
