Pepper seeds from Aldi fruit?
« on: January 19, 2014, 20:14 »
Hi

Saw mention of someone having success with the small orange peppers from Aldi.  If I bought some tomorrow and just cut open the fruit and sowed would they germinate?  Or do they need to be dormant for a time/dry out?

I want to try them just to see if my homemade propagator is going to work well.

TIA

Adri

It is usual to dry them out first, as was advised in the thread you mention.

I don't know if they would work 'wet'. Try some and find out for yourself  ;)

I had some seeds germinate inside the pepper a few years ago, so it would probably be fine to use them fresh.
Are you going to give more details about your propagator?

I know we usually let seeds dry out before we re-sow, but if you think about it.  If left on the plant, that pepper would eventually fall onto the ground, then sit inside the fruit until it rotted away, then some of the seeds would germinate and grow into a new plant.

So I too would say, try it and see. sow some in your propagator, but save some and try again in a couple of months.  Personally I won't be sowing anything until well into February.  Showings may germinate now, but I don't heat my greenhouse, so the plants would have to stay indoors until I could plant in a cold greenhouse.

Drying them out may be purely for storage purposes for a lot of seeds. When we eventually cut up the big pumpkin to get the seeds out, a lot of them had germinated, put root into the flesh of the pumpkin, and had the seed leaves through! All inside the pumpkin itself.
Some seed will be even more viable when fresh so there is no harm in trying. The only problem with using seed from a supermarket pepper is that it's highly likely that the original plant would have been an F1 hybrid, therefore the resulting plants from seed saved from them will probably give very different results.

Funny but my daughter has just given me seeds from a yellow and red pepper she has chopped up for our evening meal tonight and I've just scraped them off the core of the pepper onto a plate to dry. As I have a greenhouse coming I'm going to give them a go.
