manure tea - is it really that simple to make?
« on: January 15, 2014, 11:11 »
Having made and used comfrey tea and nettle tea last year, I read that a tea can be made from manure.
Has anyone done this and how did they do it? What did you use it on and when?

Sorry for so many questions. This year I want to use as many natural methods of feeding veggies and fruit as I can.

I was brought up on a farm and I remember being sent out in the fields soon after I learned to walk with a hessian sack to collect sheep droppings. This was then hung in a barrel of water for a few weeks and the liquid used on most crops. I don't remember if there were any that did not get treated.

It's that simple? I'll give it a go as I've got plenty of manure.

It is that simple, yes.  Any manure will do but sheep is best. We trialled it on one of our plots once, in the interests of allotmenteers  :D  They're all excellent. You dilute it with rain water til it's the colour of weak tea, same as you do for comfrey.

Have fun  :)

Last question (maybe) ....
Use it as you would comfrey tea as well? Only at certain times of the year?

Mrs Growster regularly waters everything with a mixture of comfrey, nettle and 6x tea.

It is very easy to apply of course, and you just chuck the finished hessian bag away when the butt is empty, and start a new batch!

I think it means tea made from 6x which is extra a strength chicken pellets.
So a tea is made using comfrey leaves, nettle leaves and 6x granules soaked in water.

Am I at all close to the correct explanation Growster?

Absolutely spot on, Yana! Thank you!

The 6x is from here http://www.6-x.co.uk/ and you probably need to get it from a biggish garden centre. It's not cheap, but a bag will last a season, even longer if you use it sparingly, but it doesn't last forever, and if it gets wet in the bag, it really needs to be spread around a bit, as the ammonia can get quite strong!!

Sorry not to have explained all this before..:0)
