I know that my soil is acidic and as last year was my first year I didn't know this was as important as it is. I have just been reading about liming and it says it is best done in the autumn so is it too late to do it this week on eni buy some?

Also, are there any plants which won't appreciate me liming their soil this year?

Its not too late for lime just don't put it where you are going to put your spuds

I now Lime a few weeks prior to planting. I don't know if this is correct, but it has been fine for me over recent years. Oh I agree about not using it where your spuds are going.

My brassicas get limed at the time of planting.

That's interesting. I have to say that liming a few weeks before planting would fit better in my schedule (especially considering the appalling weather we have at the moment. I may just do that then (but avoiding the spuds). Thanks all!

I lime when I'm getting the brassica beds ready - which is as the seeds are sown in trays at home in Feb/ March

I too lime at the time of planting; a little lime and a few chicken pellets and a pinch of "nutri-mate" in the planting hole, heel in firmly and scatter a bit more lime around the seedlings. Our soil is fairly alkaline anyway.

Our soil is pretty limey so I don't always bother.  When I do, it's usually around planting time.

I read somewhere of some trials that showed liming was more effective if it's done months and months beforehand, so this year I'm going to lime the peas and beans bed in midsummer, which should give enough time before the autumn/winter mulching. Be interesting to see if it makes any difference.
