I am considering a patch for asparagus, but wondered on the actual amount of harvest each plant gives. I understand the crown can't be picked properly until the 3rd year and just wanted a rough idea of how many plants I would need, there would be only the 2 of us eating them. I have plenty of space available.

Even though it is a real treat in the spring you can't eat it every single day as you would get tired of it and there are other things to enjoy as well as asparagus at that time of year. Consequently it is easily overlooked for a few days and then when you look at it again some of the shoots have grown very tall but the tips are still edible and any that have gone a bit too long or tough can be chopped up or liquidised and made into soup to be put in the freezer for the winter. 
We have 15 mature (early) plants which are adequate for just the two of us but my sons have just discovered its delicious flavour and texture so I have planted another 20 (late) for a more lengthy harvest.
My advice would be to plant more than you think you need as in a poor year it will suffice for the two of you but in a good year you can give the surplus away and stay sweet with the neighbours.
