A good green cabbage please
« on: November 26, 2013, 08:01 »
I've grown Greyhound this year, early and late sowings, so they've lasted till now. Seems reliable, but it's very pale inside, great for the summer as coleslaw, but looking a bit insipid on the plate right now  :(

I'm not keen on the very dark, strongly flavoured cabbages, but one with a green inside would be nice for Autumn.
So, which variety to grow?

I find that even those with the darkest green leaves have a pale heart -- I think it is due to lack of light inside the solid mass.

The only way I have green cabbage is to crop before they heart up like spring greens only from late summer cabbages planted a bit later s they are croppable around now, or to use the tops of the brussels

our favourite is offenham flower of spring, it does have a small white heart but outers are dense green and they mature april/may. i sow them in july in pots, plant out when ready, net them (pigeons)and they sit through the winter and heart up following spring, no fuss with slugs or cabbage whites. flavourwise our favourite and kids wouldn't eat greens before i grew these

Minicole I found was a good combination. Small and fairly green even inside and not too strong a flavour either.

Tip of the day.. If you add  half a teaspoon of bi-carb when cooking it will enhance the colour..

I've also been known to add a bit of green cake colouring in the past..

Alternative tip of the day....don't do this.

Adding bi-carb to fruit or veg kills the vitamins.

Good fertile ground and stake around this time of year, harvest the center first and then they will grow side shoots and crop for a good while into the spring if you are lucky.

Cooking for less time keeps the greens, well, green ::)

How about bright yellow as second prize Mum?   ;)

Shredded hard white cabbage stir-fried/braised (lid on) with a little oil, garlic, fennel seeds, turmeric and seasoning until soft and slightly caramelised - delish (even without the turmeric or garlic!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
