Have I planted too closely??
« on: October 25, 2013, 18:07 »
Hi, in my haste to get my garlic in the plot area I've just cleared, whilst watching a 2yr old...  I've planted my garlic 4" apart in staggered rows rather than leaving a larger spacing between the rows - is this going to be a major problem? I don't fancy trying to find & replant them!

Thanks

You may find the bulbs are a little smaller than normal but otherwise there should not be a problem.

Agree that the most likely consequence is smaller bulbs, due to the bulbs competing with each other.  But you've left enough physical space in which the bulbs can develop, so how about an increased feeding and watering regime, so that the inter-crop competition doesn't result in small bulbs?

For me the real drawback of planting too close is that I then have to hand-weed, instead of hoeing...

Good idea about the extra feeding etc & it's a good thing I like pulling up weeds!! Haha
