What size jars?
« on: October 25, 2013, 09:23 »
I want to bottle some of the produce from my plot but cant decide what size jars I need. There are 2 of us so does that mean I go for the 500ml size or do I need bigger ones. I realise that this is somewhat of a dumb question but those are the ones I'm good at.

Interested to hear of your experiences.

It depends what you are preserving, I think.

Pickles, chutneys, marmalades and jam work well in the usual 1 lb (500ml) jam jar size - becuse these home-made products keep well in or out of the fridge (if you use a set recipe, rather than adlib)  :)
Shop bought products seem to go off very quickly nowadays, I find!

Whole or quartered fruits like plums need the space of a larger jar, while mint sauce type preserves are better in smaller jars.

For pasta sauces (or plain passata) for 2 the 350g Lloyd Grossman jars are perfect. If you know someone who eats these get them to save the jars for you  :D

I use recycled jam jars for almost everything. I open more than one if needed but the small quantities mean no waste.

I'd say stick with the 500ml size and the 250ml sizes. Which to use depends on what you're making and how much of it you'd use within a reasonable time.  My widowed mum sticks with the 250ml size which works out best for her - no waste and no pressure to use up something she might not eat that regularly.
