bracken
« on: October 25, 2013, 19:13 »
I read some where that slugs eat dead bracken and it kills them as it is poisonous so I intend to collect a few bags once it dies off and deploy on the allotment around the path edges etc.
Does any one else use it for that purpose ? and is there any harm in it

You need to be a bit careful with bracken. The fronds and spores are harmful to humans (carcinogenic) and the green foliage is toxic to grazing animals. I'd say the best thing you can do with it is compost it down as this breaks down the harmful stuff. It's quite high in potash so it is useful in potting mixes when rotted down.

Never heard of it being used to kill slugs but if it does that it probably kills lots of other things as well.
