Folks,

I've had bad luck with gooseberries for the last few years - a new experience. For years they were 'neglected' but fruited no bother.

I've decided to replace my stock, but was somewhat shocked at the price. I've tried propagating from cuttings but just ended up with dead twigs.

I know it's a long term plan, but since I've had no goosegogs for the last 4-5 years anyway I thought I'd try from seed.

I've found a seller on the www, but wonder if folk have any tips for success?

I've always found them easy to strike from cuttings but Good Luck with the seed.

Seed

    Seeds require moist stratification, just above freezing, for three to four months.
    The plants commence bearing in 5 years from seed and 2 years from cuttings.

I have found it very easy to root gooseberry cuttings. Last year, around this time, I just shoved some prunings into holes made with the prongs of a fork, firmed in and just left. Most of them took. 3 years ago I was given some 1 year old rooted cuttings just like this and now they are quickly becoming substantial bushes.

If you peg down lower branches, they will root and can then be separated from the parent plant whenever you're ready. Easier than cuttings - I always fail with them......
