Cleaning out coops with Jeyes?
« on: October 02, 2013, 06:17 »
When doing a coop clean out with something like Jeyes fluid I'm wondering how people make sure the exess run off doesn't pose a problem to the hens?  I've got a couple of holes drilled in the bottom corner of the floor of the coop for the fluid to drain out of but am paranoid that the hens will peck around the area and maybe consume some of the liquid which might do them harm. Just wondering what "techniques" other people on here use and if they can maybe offer some tips for doing a full coop clean out?

The coop would need to be dry before the hens are allowed back in and preferably aired well to 'dilute' the smell of Jeyes which can be quite powerful especially if the hens are shut up with it. Can you catch the run off in a bucket or similar via the holes you have drilled? Be aware and this may not apply to you that Jeyes is poisonous to cats!
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

No, can't fit a bucket or similar vessel underneath to catch the run off as it's too close to the ground. Just wondering how other people do it.

We use Jeyes fluid for our run and coop. We always use it on a sunny, breezy day.  We make sure there is plenty of dry bedding in the coop and we don't put it in until the Jeye's is just about or totally dry.  My husband shoo's the hens away from the concrete around the pen while he applies the Jeye's.  They know the smell and won't go near it until it is dry.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

You could always use another disinfectant which degrades safely; for example bleach degrades to common salt.

Yeah, could do I suppose. Already got the Jeyes though that's the thing but think it might be just a bit risky to use incase they ingest some of it.

Wouldn't use it. Chap on the site has lost 5 birds due to illness since cleaning his coop with it. Horrible stuff.

I scoop up my poop from the board each morning(since june) and then spray  with very diluted jeyes fluid and surrounding areas but not near nest boxes..up to now ive had no health problems with my flock because of that i think, its a 4x6ft kids   play house so i keep the doors open untill the smell has gone.
I also spray neem oil solution inside and out fortnightly to deter mites..no idea if its deters anything but i have nothing to loose by trying(works on some of my plants  :))..not had red mite yet but their under a sycamore tree so im sure i will get some  :(
