Supporting giant tomatoes
« on: August 30, 2013, 19:22 »
I am growing a couple of Cuban Flower tomatoes, which have giant tomatoes almost at the ripening stage.  To be fair I have quite small hands, but I couldn't fit one into the palm of my hand.   They seem to be getting heavier by the day.

Any tips on the best way of supporting the fruits until they ripen? I am growing them outdoors in large pots.

I don't recognise the variety - but you can support any heavy fruits or trusses with wide strips cut from ladies tights to make hammocks that you tie to  canes.

once they're cut into strips you will be surprised how much the tights stretch  :nowink: so make sure the strips are wide enough  :)

That's a great idea.   The variety is from Real Seeds.  I bought it last year, it isn't in their current catalogue so I want to save some seed.   It looks great.  Pictures when it is ripe.

Can we go begging for some seed , please?

Tights are grand for all support in the garden, cut to size, also any netting like thing will do, you have.

I will see how successful I am with the seed. It's a rare variety, so good to keep going.
