Advice re my Butternut squash
« on: August 17, 2013, 21:02 »
I planted 2 butternut squash plants and they are both doing really well. So well in fact that I have between 6 and 8 squashes coming on each plant. However should I limit the number of squash to each plant and is their an optimum length that I should let  the plant runners grow to. Being a newbie to the allotement I am reluctant to get rid of anything that is actually growing.

The consensus seems to 'leave it be and let nature takes its course'....as far as butternut squash are concerned. I do with mine and they don't seem to cause any harm. Any the growing season for BNS is until mid October and beyond, so there's plenty of time yet! I do feed mine with comfrey tea from time to time. :)

I probably wouldn't let more fruit set as they will have very little chance of growing to any decent size.  I would rather the plant put its energy into what is there already. :D Sounds like you've got plenty.

Thank you both for your help. I will concentrate on the fruit that I have and hopefully enjoy the fruits of my labours come mid october.

I've been toying with the same problem myself I have 2 plants and both have 6 fruits on each (of what I have found) that are growing very quickly infact a couple are the size of the small squashes you get in supermarkets already!

I have decided to let them be in my first year of growing them.

The young green fruit can be eaten in the same way as courgettes, so nothing is wasted  :D
