Two Week Old Chicks
« on: August 17, 2013, 15:31 »
Hi!  We have two week old chicks that have been doing great up until today.  This week we have mother and chicks out to free range in our back garden, highly supervised for a half hour or so.  They reside in a chicken chalet with their mother with a small run.  Mother has been going stare crazy in there and is constantly pacing back and forth rosey.  She's molting too.  It is a very windy over cast day here and I noticed when we put them all back into their little run that the Jersey Giant chick huddled alone.  Its crop is full and she's been fine until now.  I put bubble wrap over the wire mesh of the run to block the wind, as the chicks don't get under their mother anymore for warmth.

She still takes care of her chicks while they free range, but the chicks are starting to wander.  I'm getting uneasy about this whole situation and I don't like the appearance of that one black chick.  Could anyone please give me some advice or/and reassurance.

When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Chicks normally still go under Mum for a lot longer than 2 weeks.  You could try putting them all in the coop with food and water so they are warm enough.  I would not use bubble wrap as they will peck it.  I would also have a brooder ready in case the chicks need bringing in to be kept warm.

Thank you!  We have them all in the coop now and my husband checked them.  Two were under Mother Hen and the third was playing - full of beans.  So I think I must just be a nervous Nanny!   ::)

Does anyone fancy a guess at the sex of these chicks?  I say two hens and one cockerel.
