I grow stonking big parsnips in a due north back garden about 1 metre out from the house. They get very little direct sun. I've also used this most shaded bed for things that bolt easy (coriander, radish, spinach).  Got decent beetroot, little gem and chives last year too.

I've found the state of the soil to be almost as important as weather / sunlight. This shaded bed of mine is a 2 foot high raised bed with a good few years of (used) manure, compost etc.
