Having loads of problems with weeds around my purple sprouting broccoli and leeks, especially fat hen. I've tried using a hoe but its kinda difficult as they seem to like growing right next to the plants. I even hoed one of the broccolis by accident. Dont think i killed it but didn't help it either.

So i was thinking about mulching around these two crops.

My options are straw and woodchips, any idea which would be best? and should I leave the mulch on all winter?

Your immediate solution is careful hand weeding. I know it is tedious but it is the only way. Do not try to mulch until you have the ground clear of weeds.

Not too sure about mulching leeks but the PSB would be fine. Straw would be better than wood chips, or you could use grass mowings.
