Runner Beans in a pot - how deep?
« on: June 09, 2013, 14:39 »
Right then, I have three lonely runner bean plants left.  I've planted the Munty Frame up (a thing of wonder, may I say) and given some plants away.  I could squeeze these three plants onto the frame.  But thought it might be nice to have them in a pot in the garden at home.  I live in a small block of 21 flats, with large gardens, and thought some of the older folks here could have a few runners for their sunday lunch.  How deep would the pot have to be?  They are polestar beans.  Also, I'm not expecting to feed EVERYONE with three plants, just a couple of ladies and gents  ;)

Seeing that your supposed to dig a bean trench a spade deep for the roots to feed on then i would think at least a foot deep pot would be required.

A pot big enough to hold enough water for the day they are very thirsty plants.

I have that very container which I used to have as a pond. I was thinking I could grow stuff at the base of them like radish and salad leaf ?

You could grow some quick crops around the base while the beans are too small to cause a shade problem.

We have salad leaves on the outside of our beans, we did try inside but found that didnt work as the beans went too fast

I have a large pot of runners on the decking out the back garden. It has 3 plants and growing really well, the first pic below shows these. I find runners really rewarding with minimal effort. I give them tommy feed every week or so. The pots seem to deter slugs and snails a little although I still chuck a few pellets every so often. In the second pic are 3 plants in individual pots against my fence. These were planted a fortnight or so later (about 5 weeks ago) It might be interesting to see which setup crops better......

Space is limited here but I have a gap earmarked to trench some runner canes for next spring. I'll have to work on the missus though as she wants to put decking on it :=[

Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit.

It is possible to cut the bottom off of the pots so the beans can put roots right down.  But the pics here of container grown beans are very impressive.
