Weird beetroot.
« on: July 24, 2013, 08:50 »
Last week I set some beetroot off in modules as the patch I want to plant them in wasn't ready to sow direct.
They are now showing after just one week. Trouble is, they are showing too well. I know for certain that I only set one seed per module, but there are two stems coming from most modules. Is this the case with beetroot and I'm just showing my ignorance? Should I remove one at some stage? Also, how long should I leave in the modules before palnting out?

Unless you buy a packet which is labelled "monogerm", what you perceive to be a seed is actually a cluster of them.

I don't thin beetroot. I harvest them while they are still small and find that they'll push each other aside as they grow.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So I'm going to harvest twice as much as I expected. Sometimes the unexpected isn't always unpleasant.  :)

Another one who doesnt thin here they fight for the right to grow in my beds. I dont know many people who want massive beetroot so its not a problem in that rsspect.

Seems to have been a good year fro beetroot as not only have they grown well but really fast.

Actually two is not a lot, you usually get half a dozen, or so.
