Exterior Treatment for Coops
« on: July 18, 2013, 15:04 »
I bought some Forsham coops that had been creosoted inside & out (& still smell very strong).  Ive sanded down the outsides ready to treat but I am leaving the insides as a) they are in Ok shape and b) as they have previously been creosoted it may keep the dreaded RM at bay.  I know that you cannot buy creosote anymore but you can buy 'creocote' which is a substitute &  apparently smells the same.  I don't fancy the idea of getting covered in something that smells like creosote just for the sake of the smell.  Can anyone recommend anything else for the exterior woodwork???  Cheers

I am not sure if other products will adhere if it already has had creosote on it.     Creocote is a substitute which is similar but not as dangerous to use.  You do have to follow the instructions carefully though as with all chemical products.

My only other thought would be linseed oil but I don't know if it would be any good or safe to use.

just had a quick google for you and found this page for you, however I am not sure if an oil based paint or an aluminium one are safe for chickens either.

Phew  thanks for that  but I don't fancy that malarkey!!!  the farmer next door suggested red diesel (which he said he would give me)  but to be honest  I don't fancy either.  The exterior has sanded down quite well, almost to original wood colour, so I think I might give linseed oil a go.....  thanks

I don't blame you not using something like that.

If the wood has sanded down so well you could try a test area with a pet friendly fence paint to see if it adheres to it.   ;)

it is for professional users only and only for re-treating previously treated wood. Your friend is breaking the law by letting you have any. It is carcinogenic which is why it has been banned by DEFRA and as such we cannot be seen to be promoting it.
