newbie runner bean question.
« on: July 12, 2013, 19:44 »
please excuse what is probably a stupid question but it's my first of growing runner beans, or anything for that matter.

i have tried searching for a similar question asked by someone else but couldn't find anything, hence why i'm thinking it's a silly question.

do i pinch the tops out of my runner beans? and will they produce side shoots?

they are about 7 - foot tall now and at the top of the canes. they look nice and healthy, but pretty spindly. all the ones i've seen seem to be a lot more bushier, if that makes sense.

any help much appreciated.

thanks.

No such thing as a silly question - if you don't know the answer ;)

Yes, you pinch the tops off just before they reach the top of the canes ;)

Only a couple of mine have reached the top so far and i have never pinched out the tops but i may do nkw seen as its what should be done. Mine dont look as bushy as normal.
I may need a step ladder to reach the top though.

I usually nip the tops when they get to the top of the canes, but whether they grow sideshoots? They are usually such a tangle I can't tell, but I presume they will, that growing energy has to go somewhere. :)

Sometimes I do, mostly I don't. We always get more beans than we can eat and give loads away.

The rabbits kindly nipped off the growing tips of my runner beans and I can confirm that they have grown side shoots...
