Stalosan F
« on: July 03, 2013, 16:38 »

My chickens are in a run with no grass (they ate it), at least one chicken has coccidiosis.  I have some Stalosan F, which I used to put on the floor of my old hen house.  Does anyone know if It would be helpful to sprinkle it over the whole pen? It's open air except the 3m run which they don't go in much.

I would like to try to help prevent the others getting sick.

I use mine on top of bark chips which I added after my chooks ate all the grass.  I don't have the luxury of being able to move them around the garden.  I still change the bark chips and water the area down in the summer, but find it keeps the flies and smell down.  None of my chooks have been ill, so it must be doing something.

I've just posted on another thread but you need to use Bio-oo-cyst. I was told that Stalosan didnt kill off the oocysts that causes the illness.

Are they being treated for the coccidiosis? You could get some coxoid in ready (other brands available) because if the others pick up the illness you will have to act quickly. Its not expensive

Coccidiosis kills very quickly

Not treated yet as on antibiotics...have an issue with diagnosis at the mo too as now told it might not be coccidiosis as they were in fact vaccinated, which contradicts the vet.

Anyway, I still want to do all I can to stop the others getting anything so I will start my cleaning frenzy!

This is the information that comes with Stalosan F

"Stalosan F is a disinfectant powder, applied directly to were animals reside, to absorb excess moisture and so reduce smells.

Stalosan F is a disinfectant effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, coccidial oocysts, fly and roundworm eggs.

We recommend using Stalosan F at the rate of 50g / meter sprinkled on the floor of the chicken coop on a weekly basis."

I hope the information helps.

I have always used it in my runs for years and wouldnt use another product.

I was gutted to find out my local supplier was not continuing to sell it however with a little research I have now found a new supplier a little further away but a lot cheaper as they get it in by the pallet load for local egg suppliers and they dont mind the odd 25kg bag being taken off.

Bark chips are not ideal for keeping hens on as can cause aspergillosis. Wood chips are better :)

Have you separated the poorly chick out from the others? I had 2 POL hens that died from coccidiosis (they were sold to me with it but the breeder denied it - bit obvious seeing as their droppings were blooming from the start and the vet diagnosed it )
I had to treat all the 3 chickens intensively with antibiotics but only managed to save one as the other 2 were too far gone.  I then continued to treat the remaining one with Coxoid afterwards to make double sure that she didn't come down with it.  :(
It was horrible so I hope you manage to save her and the others don't come down with it.
