Broad beans shall i just give up on them
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:25 »
My broad beans were stunning and then blackfly arrived, now it looks like they have chocolate spot, they have lots of pods but should i just strip the bed and put something else in and if we get any beans they will just be a bonus.

They look awful.

Chocolate spot does look horrible.  The  beans in the pod will be fine so, if it was my beans, I'd keep them going.

When you do lift the plants, put them in the bin rather than compost them.

In my experience, if the crop is late and blackfly damage is bad, as in this case, I would be tempted to pull it all. Some crops just miss the cusp and it's all downhill. It can take weeks for ailing plants to produce next to nothing, by which time space is forfeited.
Later this year, make sure you plant aquadulce claudia in the Autumn as your main broad bean crop.... they beat the blackfly to it easily.
