i have a small apple tree it is just starting to bear fruit ,will it be neccessary to net it against insects?

I've never protected my two espalier trained apple trees and have always had a good crop with no maggoty ones. I suppose it may depend on your local area but maybe try without this year and see how you go - you then have some experience for next year.

Unless your neighbours frequently complain about wasp damage or codling moth, it's not really necessary.

Always practice good sanitation with your fruit trees and you'll likely not have much problem. Good sanitation involves removing fallen fruit regularly, binning any infected leaves or branches, regular feeding and watering (if needed), pruning to alleviate fruit production stress and open up the tree to air flow, etc.
