Not eating well. Spongy crop...?
« on: July 05, 2013, 01:02 »
Hi all my 3 months chicks are not eating well esp the growers mayb they didnt get enough grit of the ground like others. They r being wormed at the moment another day left. Friend of mine said used netex tonic liquid should work.. I have seen some posts about crop problem but not had the chance tonsave them.

Their crops are bit spongy and feel like watery.. I have been putting garlic powder in their water mayb instead of gloves.

Just going to check up on them now.

Any advice would be great :-)

You will need to check for sour crop or impacted crop.  Make sure they have not been eating any bedding.  They should have access to grit all the time as they need it to digest their food.  You can not rely on them finding the right size grit from the ground.

There is some information on crop problems HERE but if you do a search you will find lots more information on cause and treatment.

To add to above; be sure to get the right grit. We get oyster shell and large grit and put in separate dishes. The bag for the large grit suggests it is the only grit they need, but the pieces are huge and I don't think they can all manage it. Ours free range all the time but seem to consume quite a large quantity of the stuff we put out. White maggots seem good for hard crop problems and can't do any harm (but probably no cure) for sour crop. Worth a try if your're not sure what is going on.
