Nankins
« on: June 30, 2013, 09:44 »
A year in from starting to keep chickens for the first time I have learnt a lot. Initially I bought a small group of mixed purebreds selecting them purely on how they looked (I know, but you have to start somewhere) Anyway I have decided to start breeding and have chosen Cream Legbar as one breed.  I have also been offered a pair of young Nankins and I am interested because they are a true bantam and are listed as potential endangered breed.  I have done a lot of  research on them but it is mostly theory. Does anyone have experience of keeping/breeding Nankins. Thanks.

Never heard of the breed before but just had a look and they are a very pretty looking bird.  Good luck with your project.   ;)

Picked up my pair of Nankins today and they are gorgeous. Both of their respective parents are show winners so I am looking forward to bringing them on and see if they breed. Apparently the hens have a strong tendency to go broody and when the chicks are about 4 weeks old the cockerel takes over while the hen lays again.  I chose this breed because there is not as much need to cull the cockerels as they are an endangered species...

Not like my chicks then, they have a built in predator alarm with their broodies warning them!   ::)
