Plum Tree
« on: July 03, 2013, 15:50 »
Hi, am after some advice about possibly moving a plum tree from one position to another on my allotment.

The tree has been there for at least 3 years to my knowledge. It didn't fruit at all last year and I thought I'd get rid of it but....this year it has loads of fruit on it.  It needs a good old prune I suspect at the end of the year and my question is does anyone have any advice about moving it from where it is now to another position as to be frank it's been positioned in a very awkward place.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

When my OH was a landscape gardener, he often had to move trees.  He said best times to do it are between November and March, same as planting new ones, and give it water, water, and even more water!

And hope for the best!  oh and take out the biggest root ball you can.  On the TV when they move trees, if they are not too big, they stand it on a tarpaulin or something, makes it a bit easier to lift or drag depending on how big it is now.

Avoid pruning your plum tree in winter, it can cause silver leaf. The RHS says spring for young trees, mid summer for older trees.

Just been having a quick google and it appears that a plum tree should be pruned in early July.  Mine has loads of fruit on it - so should I prune now?

Actually I have no idea how to prune - in my case I shall hope for the best!!

I am confused

Just cut out crossing branches and control the hight ! But always do stone fruit when the sap is up .
I cook therefore I grow

I've never found plums to be a real problem that need hard regular pruning like apples do. As Sparkyrog says, just prune out what's in the way, broken or crossing.
