Containers for lettuce
« on: June 23, 2013, 20:06 »
Evening All!  I've been saving (not 'hoarding' as OH says ) lots of plastic veg punnets, the sort of thing you get mushrooms etc in.  I've started growing mixed leaf salad in some of them.  I was wondering whether I could grow little gem lettuce in them too?  I know I won't get many to a punnet - but that doesn't matter - it's only me who likes lettuce here (except maybe a leaf or two for the guinea pigs occasionally) and I do have rather a lot of punnets.  But I definitely HAVE NOT being hoarding them, just in case, no I haven't

You'd only get a couple in a big, deep punnet but it's possible because lettuce is shallow rooted. Sow just a few seeds and weed out the duds/replant the other good ones and leave two. Keep them in semi-shade and moist and you may be lucky. Don't forget drainage holes.
I've never managed to get Little Gem to heart up. Growing during the Summer can be dodgy because they tend to bolt.
What's wrong with hoarding plastic punnets, eh? I use them all the time for sowing small quantities of seed and I re-pot plants I give away in them so I keep my pots!!!!  8) :D

I've grown little gem in an old washing up bowl which was about 4 inches deep. Just make sure they don't dry out. I try to grow my lettuce in partial shade which seems to help.

I grow nearly all of my lettuce and mixed salad in this size of mushroom box. I just line them with the plastic from old compost bags :)

In this pic it's clear polythene I've used to line the box, just made a few holes in the bottom  ;)

Thank you everyone!  I've never had much success with lettuce/mixed leaf mixes.  I think its because I sow too much in one go, rather than little and often. Great pics Mum.  Is that mixed leaf lettuce mix? I'm going to spend an hour later on this afternoon sowing some lettuce seeds.  OH only complains because the tower of plastic punnets fall on his head every time he opens the pantry door.  And then there is the tower I've started on the kitchen window sill....... :D Bless him, he's been very good, very patient when I insisted on bringing in my cuke plants everynight during the end May beginning of June and having them on the bedroom window sills!  They are in 40 cm pots and he HATES cucumber.  Ha! I've got some shelving in a shady spot in the garden (only gets early morning sun) so I shall line my punnets up on that once I've planted up the last of the bedding plants that are on there at the mo.  Thanks again!  :)

I use the mushroom punnets for growing grass. Our lawn is contantly getting wrecked by the dog, and I have a steady supply of replacement turfs to repair any brown bits.
Breaking new ground.............literally!
